What is Stop-Start and How Does it Work?
If a car has a stop-start system, the engine automatically switches off and on when it stops and starts moving again. The thought behind the creation of the system was to limit the amount of time a car is idling, therefore lowing vehicle emissions and improving the air quality. Having a stop-start engine can also lower fuel consumption so can be a money-saving benefit to those that have it.
When a stop-start system detects the car stopping and coming out of gear, the engine control unit (ECU) cuts the ignition to turn the engine off. When the car clutch is engaged and put into gear, the engine is triggered to restart, and the journey can be continued without the need to push any buttons or turning the key.

Do stop-start engines cause more pollution?
On any given journey, there will always be moments when the car is stationary. Either stuck in traffic or stopped at lights – a time where the engine is idling and has no need to be on. As a result of this, there is no doubt in the fact that having stop-start technology in many cars, would give off fewer emissions than those that don’t have it.
Do stop-start engines wear out your battery?
A car’s computer will always check the battery levels before cutting off your engine – this makes sure the engine will turn back on. In some cars, they have a separate battery supply for the stop-start system, so you’ll always be fine to use it.
Do stop-start systems use more fuel?
The American Automobile Association (AAA) researched into stop-start technology and found that there was a 5-7% increase in fuel economy from the engine turning off when it wasn’t needed. A low percentage that adds up over time – you could end up saving a decent amount of fuel over a year, they do not use any more fuel.
