Behind the Scenes with Allied Apprentices

Our Allied Autocare Edinburgh branch is situated just five minutes from the motorway in West Craig’s Industrial Estate and offers car and van servicing, MOT’s and repairs for both private and fleet customers. Allied Autocare Edinburgh has nine technicians working hard including two master technicians, one parts technician, and two apprentice technicians.

We’re kicking off a series of behind the scenes interviews with Struan Ramsey, one of our apprentice technicians, he’s part of our team who turnaround 10 to 15 cars on average every day. Struan has been with us since November 2018, let’s find out how he’s getting on.

How are you getting on? What have you been learning so far in your role?

I’m getting on great so far, I’ve learned a lot and covered things like tyres, brakes, suspension and a few parts of the engine such as timing belts and gearboxes. I’ve learned a lot from my mentor Darren who’s been great as well as fellow colleagues, Allan, Dean, Elliot, Robo and Ty. Everyone in the workshop has been great actually.

What challenges have you faced so far and how did you overcome these?

The biggest challenge I’ve faced so far was damaging my first tyre, which was actually damaged pretty badly. I had to accept the mistake and move on. One of the fellow mechanics helped me, taught me the proper way to change the tyre and how to avoid making the same mistake again.

Can you tell us what you enjoy most about your apprenticeship?

I really enjoy learning new skills and techniques as well as meeting new people, which has brought me out of my shell and made me more confident when meeting and talking to new people. Developing these skills helps me enjoy my apprenticeship much more.

What are you looking forward to the most regarding your apprenticeship or future career?

Definitely learning new skills and working with more advanced tools and equipment which will help me take on more advanced jobs. Fully understanding a car inside and out is a big goal.
